WHO DO YOU THINK YOUR ARE?
It is an important question. We either build on the rock or we build on the sand. Jesus made this clear in his well known parable in Matthew Ch7. But we are going to look at Matthew 16:28 today. This is one of the most loaded verses in scripture. We are, after all, talking about a FOUNDATION STONE here.
Jesus (who, by the way, was most likely referred to as "Yahshua" or "Yehushua" to his disciples, because after all that is more or less what his Jewish mother would have called him) is saying, that whatever this verse is all about, this will be the foundational premise upon which He builds and He declares, up front, that what He builds will have extreme opposition, but that it will not succeed in destroying that which He builds. So, you can expect a lot of deception around this verse. I trust that I will shed true light and not deception. But you be the judge of that.
PETER means "STONE or PIECE OF ROCK" - Again the Greek is clear.
THE CONTEXT, WHICH IS OF COURSE WHAT THIS SONG IS ALL ABOUT, IS WHERE DECEPTION TAKES PLACE.
SO WHAT WAS THE QUESTION JESUS WAS ASKING and to which SIMON replied: YOU ARE THE, CHRIST (or ANOINTED MESSIAH) and as a result of which, Yahshua changed Simon's name to PETER (Stone or piece of rock) and made the statement that on this Rock (a different Greek word) he would build his church?
You can read more about the word Peter and Rock in the Greek in the Biblehub Pulpit Commentary, where it make the above distinctions, between piece of rock (Peter) and Rock, clear.
WHO DO MAN SAY THAT I AM?
This was the simple question Jesus asked. Who do men say I am? But there is a great deal being revealed in this.
There are at least two views you could take.
Reviewing the context more closely and baring in mind the Psalm which says: "What is man that you mindful of him, the son of man that you visit him?" and then considering that throughout a great deal of his ministry, he referred to himself as THE SON OF MAN, this question is a loaded one. Because now you are hearing, WHO DO MEN SAY THE SON OF MAN IS?
If you get that far, then you are really asking: Who am I?
On the revelation then, of who the son of man is, you then have him say, that on this revelation he will build his "CALLED OUT ONES"! (Greek Ekklesia)
